Cecilia

Cecilia
(? second century)
   Legendary Saint and Martyr.
Little certain is known of the life of St Cecilia. Some authorities believe that she died as a virgin martyr in Sicily in the late second century, but others put her death in Rome in the third century. She is the patron saint of music and is commonly portrayed playing the organ, but the musical connection was only established in the sixteenth century. One version of her story is known to English readers through the narrative of the Second Nun’s tale in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Her body is said to have been found completely intact in the Church of St Cecilia in Rome when the church was undergoing repair in 1599.
